Naming System of Balinese
Giving the name of the baby at
birth, in general, has a specific purpose. It can be found in Indonesia, including Bali. In
Balinese, naming babies generally has certain expectations. This study belongs to the linguistic
anthropology. Accordingly, this paper discusses two issues: the linguistic structure and
meaning, both lexical meaning/ textual and contextual meaning.
Based on the analysis of the
linguistic structure, it was found that the names of Balinese were classified into three types of
words:
(1) articles,
(2) adjectives, and
(3) numeral.
The result shows that lexically the names of
Balinese have the meaning of expectation and memory.
Besides, contextually, these names
contain special meaning based on the interpretation of
the giver.
